I do not think there was one of this magnitude since the invention of cinema… or television maybe… But now is the time to build the grammar and vocabulary of transmedia stories, explore the economics of it, create new ways of financing projects, invent innovative ways of interfacing with an audience, broaden our view of how imagination is taking a bigger part in our modern societies, what deeper needs interactive storytelling really addresses… How often in a lifetime does that happen – to have the opportunity to actually be a part of a major social and artistic shift? The Pixel Lab is going to be a milestone, the first of its kind, in this process. It is going to be an essential event in stating where we are in a transmedia world, what to do and how to do it, and where we are headed to. I can’t wait for it to start…!”

A Screen Academy Wales graduate looking for a career in television has earned the opportunity of a lifetime through a new entrant training scheme supported by Skillset Academi+.

Jamie McNaught originally signed up for the Crossover New Entrant Scheme after graduating from the University of Glamorgan not knowing exactly which direction to take. Now, after just six months of training, just six months into the seven-month course, his simple yet intelligent cross-platform ideas have set him apart from the other 13 Welsh participants, earning him a fully-funded trip to MIPTV, the international TV, internet, mobile and games market held in Cannes.

Skillset Academi+ has funded the participation of 14 Welsh graduates in the Crossover programme, the UK-wide scheme which involves 38 new entrants from across the country. The course is designed to fast-track graduates into the media, focusing on the new digital developments that are revolutionising the industry.

Jamie explained: “When I started the course I realised how interesting cross-platform production can be and how relevant this area is in today’s digital world. I’m grateful for the opportunity to visit MIPTV, present my projects and soak up the whole Cannes experience.”

Jamie will present two projects to commissioners at MIPTV, a personal project and the group project developed during the Crossover Creative Lab, an intensive five-day ideas laboratory at Gregynog, mid Wales, held back in February.

“Crossover has been a really useful, education course”, he continued. “It is taught by industry professionals who have real experience and a proven track record in their fields. It’s great that you get thrown in the deep end – the best way to learn – and have the opportunity to make some many good contacts so quickly. This is an amazing opportunity for anyone serious about a career in television and digital media.”

Skillset Academi+ is a partnership between Skillset Screen Academy Wales, Skillset Media Academy Wales and Skillset Cymru. Funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales’s Ecomonic Support Initiative, it provides vocational training for Wales’ creative media industry with the aim of boosting employability and digital media production during the economic downturn.

Support for new entrants has been high priority for the project, explained project coordinator Sue Jeffries: “The Crossover course enables the trainees to think about 360 degree content and how to develop innovative strategies for their ideas. The new entrants are learning how to generate ideas for cross-platform television programmes and, crucially, how to pitch these ideas to commissioners.”

She continued: “We were very happy to hear that Jamie had been selected to pitch. We have fourteen excellent Welsh participants on this UK-wide course, and Jamie and his peers are proving that Wales can be at the cutting edge of the cross platform world. We wish him every success at MIP TV.”
