As one of the oldest art schools in the UK, Newport School of Art Media & Design has a long tradition of excellence in moving and still image media, with the range of creative practices being regularly updated and expanded over the years. What stands out is not simply the range of individual courses in contemporary and traditional media, but the way that they reflect the strong current of media convergence that runs through our research-led teaching. NSAMD was ranked 12th our of 56 in Art & Design in the recent RAE, with 60% of the work submitted achieving the top two grades indicating research of international significance. The work of the Performance and Screen Media research group (which includes the Synergy games research group and the new Documentary Film research group) brings together creative practice across all the audio visual disciplines, including music, and is developing a clear focus on professionally and industrially relevant content creation that reflects the development of new digital platforms. The European Centre for Photographic Research is a recognised centre of international standing. Documentary film was established in the early years of the Newport Film School in the 1960s, under the patronage of John Grierson, and has established an outstanding record of student achievement measured both in awards and employment in the broadcast industry. Our focus on the business and commercial basis of the new platforms recognises that while terrestrial TV is not about to disappear, developing business models for creating content for the web and satellite is one of the most important preoccupations of the AV industries at the moment, and holds the key to the future of many of our graduates.

Since 2004, NSAMD through its film programmes has played a leading role in the development of the Skillset Screen Academy Wales, and is proud to be part of the new Media Academy Wales.
